Well that was a bit of a let down。 The plot was an intriguing "what if?" scenario, but I didn't care for the writing style。 It focused much more on world building and the big message, with a rather ham-handed delivery, rather than developing characters and letting the characters carry the plot。 Well that was a bit of a let down。 The plot was an intriguing "what if?" scenario, but I didn't care for the writing style。 It focused much more on world building and the big message, with a rather ham-handed delivery, rather than developing characters and letting the characters carry the plot。 。。。more

Great tale, takes a lot of risks - but they pay off in the end。Worthy of all its acclaim and more!

Great exercise to represent a Russian Super Man in this alternate universe, as well as the Russian Batman, a very good moral dilemma that arises regarding the role of super man on earth。 I just owe a little Hal Jordan to me

In typical DC Comics style, this is no feel good Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse alternate history/timeline romp。 Instead, we get a Communist Man of Steel who breaks a lot of eggs to make his omelet。 A whole host of DC Superheroes get their clocks cleaned by this Superman who finally has his training wheels taken off, although he is not the monster an all-powerful child of Stalin should have been。 Indeed, the Stalin we get is a WWII-style "Uncle Joe," who is a portrayed as a little rough aroun In typical DC Comics style, this is no feel good Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse alternate history/timeline romp。 Instead, we get a Communist Man of Steel who breaks a lot of eggs to make his omelet。 A whole host of DC Superheroes get their clocks cleaned by this Superman who finally has his training wheels taken off, although he is not the monster an all-powerful child of Stalin should have been。 Indeed, the Stalin we get is a WWII-style "Uncle Joe," who is a portrayed as a little rough around the edges instead of the sociopathic cold-blooded commie killer he really was。 Similarly, and for no logical reason, Soviet Superman has some sort of innate conscience which prevents him from engaging in the ruthless cruelty so typical of Bolsheviks like Stalin, Lenin, Trotsky, Beria and countless others。Anyway, the story is lots of fun as it imagines a world in which Superman is large and in charge。 The cameos from the DC Universe are particularly entertaining, although none more so than a Russian Batman who displays the sort of insanity Christian Bale never managed to capture。 Perhaps what is best, however, is the all the alternate costuming and imagery of a universe in which Russia is ascendant and America under siege。 In any case, the ending somehow manages to be refreshingly original and surprisingly perfect。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Interesting read but doesn’t hit anywhere near its potential。 I really wish Millar had done more research, or at least consulted someone well-versed in Marxism and the history of the 20th century in general。 Any dialogue concerning ideology, economics etc is incredibly cringey。A “what if” story like this needs to have some sort of reasoning and explanation for why events occur differently than our timeline, but there’s none of that。 Seemed more like an exercise in reimagining different dc charac Interesting read but doesn’t hit anywhere near its potential。 I really wish Millar had done more research, or at least consulted someone well-versed in Marxism and the history of the 20th century in general。 Any dialogue concerning ideology, economics etc is incredibly cringey。A “what if” story like this needs to have some sort of reasoning and explanation for why events occur differently than our timeline, but there’s none of that。 Seemed more like an exercise in reimagining different dc characters within this alternate universe (yawn), instead of fleshing out the universe itself。 Of COURSE at the very end the author’s solution to the conflict is “not free market capitalism or state socialism, but somEthiNg iN bEtWeen” 🙄🙄😴 just total lack of imagination。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ugh… so basically if Superman was Russian he would become an evil, heartless lunatic? After all that talk about gray I thought the story would go elsewhere, so my expectations were highly disappointed。 However, I think it would be unfair to rate this comic as 3 stars because it had some very nice things。 Oh wait, the female characters have no personality。

A brilliant idea - Communist Superman - to begin with and so cleverly explored and executed by the writers。 Really enjoyed reading this one。

Okay, I'll admit。 I don't say this for too many books in my Goodreads list, but。。。 not a fan。 I think this book is a bit simplistic。 I think maybe I came to this book too "late。" For me, it ends up being essentially a kind of dystopian fiction。。。 gosh it would suck if Superman were communist。 I somehow would have liked a more clear message that one could easily say that it sucks that he's American, that all nationalism is ideology, and somehow Superman would transcend that。 Of course, part of th Okay, I'll admit。 I don't say this for too many books in my Goodreads list, but。。。 not a fan。 I think this book is a bit simplistic。 I think maybe I came to this book too "late。" For me, it ends up being essentially a kind of dystopian fiction。。。 gosh it would suck if Superman were communist。 I somehow would have liked a more clear message that one could easily say that it sucks that he's American, that all nationalism is ideology, and somehow Superman would transcend that。 Of course, part of the problem is perhaps that I'm more sympathetic to Marxism than some, because。。。 well, grad school。 I mean, I think of Marxism as an incredibly rich "discursive field," so to speak, but in this book its far to easy to equate Marxism with the perils of Soviet communism。 。。。more

Fantástica vuelta de tuerca al mito。 Mark Millar acierta con una visión alejada de tópicos。 Un clásico

Pretty weird to turn a Soviet Superman into a Stalinist freak and then some kind of third positionist weirdo。 Kind of silly to expect coherent socialist politics out of an American comic but hey what the heck, it was a fun read anyway

One of the most original Superman stories。 What an amazing ending to bring the story together。

Pensaba que no me iba gustar y me ha encantado。 La historia alternativa de este Superman comunista es más compleja y enrevesada de lo que parece en un principio。

A fantastic reimagining of the classic superhero。 Very interesting read。 However it does fall into the most convenient sci-fi trap。。。。

A fun "What If?" Type of story that focuses on if Superman had landed in the Soviet Union instead of the good ol' USA。 It's a very entertaining story that explores the conflict of the Cold War and what if a Superman lead one of the Super World Powers。 The ending left a weird taste in my mouth, but other than that it was fun to read! This lush and beautifully drawn comic theorises that if Superman had landed in the Soviet Union, the world would have turned out quite different。 Millar isn't too interested in exploring how the Soviet ideology would have fit a Russian Superman, but he does like to reward comic books fans with a plethora of classic characters。 A fantastic read。 This lush and beautifully drawn comic theorises that if Superman had landed in the Soviet Union, the world would have turned out quite different。 Millar isn't too interested in exploring how the Soviet ideology would have fit a Russian Superman, but he does like to reward comic books fans with a plethora of classic characters。 A fantastic read。 。。。more

I don't think comic books are really for me。 I have a hard time getting into the style and the pace necessary to read them。 That being said, Superman: Red Son, while falling pray to tropes of the genre, explores an interesting alternate history in a way that is fun。 I don't think comic books are really for me。 I have a hard time getting into the style and the pace necessary to read them。 That being said, Superman: Red Son, while falling pray to tropes of the genre, explores an interesting alternate history in a way that is fun。 。。。more

Probably the best Superman story ever writtenIt will be very hard for any other Superman story to top this, expertly written it uses the mythos of its central character to the fullest extent, it asks questions like the why and the why not of supes and also answers some。 Characters are handled in the most unexpected ways like Brainiac and has the best confrontational scene between Supes and Lex。 If you love Superman as a character then this is a must read

Matt

I’m stunned every time I read this at how much it flubs the ending。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved it & the ending was great (I’m a sucker for that sort of trope) but the whole Brainiac was outsmarting Kal the whole time thing? very random and rushed… I wish there was more build up and proof of that…。

I’m shocked and amazed that this book is this wonderfully imagined and crafted。 It fully realizes what I never imagined possible: to both criticize and praise what was good and bad about the USSR。 And its ending is just。。。 flawless。 What a masterful piece of storytelling this is。
